Health and care leaders from across the Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care System (ICS) have today welcomed the appointment of Professor William Pope as the new ICS Independent Chair.
He will be joining the system in a part time capacity from September 2019 working closely with Dr Ed Garratt – the ICS Executive Lead – and other local leaders to help to further develop the local vision to work together to improve health and care for local people.
His appointment follows a competitive selection process involving a wide range of local and regional stakeholders as well as formal approval by Chief Executive of the NHS, Simon Stevens.
Will said: “I am very much looking forward to working together with colleagues from across the NHS, local authority, primary care, voluntary organisations and communities to put in place those joined up health and care services that we know people want.
“Suffolk and North East Essex ICS is already very successful and known nationally for its achievements. I have been impressed by the way in which local leaders are determined to ensure that people and local communities remain at the very centre of their plans to continue to transform the way that health and care is delivered.”
Will has a broad range of experience to bring to the role. In 2006, he joined the East of England Regional Development Agency as Non-Executive Director and later was appointed Chair. The same year he was appointed as a Non-Executive Director, then Chair, for Northamptonshire Primary Care Trust.
In 2011, Will became Non-Executive Director and Chair of Unity Leisure Limited and then in 2012 was appointed a Non-Executive Director and then Chair at East Midlands Pathology Service. Between 2013 and 2017 Will was Chair of Healthwatch Northamptonshire.
Dr Ed Garratt, Executive Lead for the Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care System, said: “I am delighted to welcome Professor William Pope to our system. The addition of an Independent Chair with Will’s experience and insights will, I am sure, help our Integrated Care System to meet its ambitions and deliver even better integrated services to the one million people we serve.”
In addition to his role as Independent Chair, Will is Chair of the University of Suffolk and since 2014 has been working as Chair of Yorkshire and Humber Academic Health Science Network. He also chairs the Audit Committee of the East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, is a Board member of Family Psychology Mutual Ltd and is Chair of the Chairs of the National Academic Health Science Network.
Sheila Childerhouse, Chair of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and the ICS Chairs Group, oversaw the appointment process. She said: “I am delighted with Will’s appointment to lead our ICS Board and would like to congratulate him. He will be responsible for holding our system to account while making sure we achieve the ambitions we have set ourselves. He will also help us to build, maintain and enhance our working relationships with a wide range of local, regional and national stakeholders.”
