In 2017, local NHS staff at North East Essex Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) raised £14,000 for various local charities including the Alzheimer’s Society, St Helena Hospice and breast cancer charities.

The 154 staff, based at Severalls Business Park in Colchester, worked continuously over the year to raise funds in their spare time and on lunch breaks for the organisations they hold dear to their hearts. Activities included weekly bake sales and savoury trollies, skydiving, running marathons, waxing and more.

“Raising money for charity in our office is always a joy as the staff are so passionate and generous. We all have causes that are close to our hearts and our colleagues are only too happy to give and help out,” said Jill Thurston, who works in administration support at the CCG. Jill raised hundreds of pounds this year for the Alzheimer’s Society by undertaking a sponsored walk along Hadrian’s Wall, organising various ‘frock swaps’ and an Elf Day for staff.

Jill is not the only one who walked the extra mile this year. Other members of staff took part in international charity efforts, including a biking challenge in Brazil and cycling from London to Paris for St Helena Hospice. Another colleague raised hundreds of pounds by running the Ipswich half-marathon.

While a lot of the charity efforts were raised through fitness and stamina, many staff at North East Essex CCG also have a sweet tooth. Thousands of pounds were made through baking cakes for breast cancer charities, Bowel Cancer UK, Macmillan and Colchester and Tendring Women’s Refuge.

“The fact that our staff have raised so much money is a tremendous achievement and this demonstrates their dedication to local causes. Our colleagues spend their days trying to improve health care services for their communities, and this year they have exceeded themselves,” said CCG Chairman and Colchester GP, Dr Hasan Chowhan.
