CLINICIANS at North East Essex Clinical Commissioning Group (NEE CCG) are calling on people in the Colchester and Tendring districts to Stay Well This Winter by keeping their medicine cabinets fully stocked.

The national NHS Help Us Help You Stay Well This Winter campaign - which is backed by clinicians - offers sensible advice to help people keep themselves and their family healthy over the coming months.

During the winter period last year, Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments throughout the county experienced unprecedented demand due to many people attending with minor illnesses.

This year, clinicians are advocating self-care to help relieve the pressure on General Practitioners (GPs) and A&E departments.

Some of the top tips to Help Us Help You Stay Well This Winter include stocking up medicine cabinets in advance with painkillers - including ibuprofen and paracetamol - cold and flu medication, antibacterial products, such as hand gels to stop illnesses spreading, indigestion and constipation remedies as well as decongestion tablets.

Doctor Philip Brown, GP with Special Interest in Emergency and Unscheduled Care and Emergency and Pre-Hospital Care Physician, said: “At this time of year it is extremely important that people stock up so that both them and their family are prepared for any illness or eventuality.

“Be prepared for minor health problems, such as colds and stomach upsets, by keeping a well-stocked medicines cupboard that contains paracetamol, ibuprofen, indigestion remedies, cough mixtures and mild laxatives. However, always remember to read the label and keep medicines out of reach from children.

“Also, if you’re on long-term medication or have a chronic condition, we would urge you to pick up your prescriptions in plenty of time, as many pharmacies are unavailable for a number of days during the festive period.”

This year the NEE CCG is asking residents throughout the Colchester and Tendring districts to contact NHS 111 or attend the Minor Injury Units in Clacton-on-Sea and Harwich, or the walk-in centre in Colchester, if they have a minor illness or a non-life threatening condition.

For more information and a full list of the pharmacies and their festive opening hours please visit the NEE CCG website.
