From 18th August 2018, in an effort to reduce surgical complications and improve recovery rates, people who smoke and are referred for elective surgery or for a surgical procedure, will be required to have at least one appointment with the Stop Smoking Service.

People who decline to have the stop smoking appointment may be refused surgery.

Essex County Council have commissioned The Essex Lifestyle Service to deliver a free lifestyle service for residents in north east Essex, enabling people to live longer, healthier lives.  To access the free stop smoking support available, speak to your GP or contact the Essex Lifestyle Service on 0300 303 9988 or email provide.essexlifestyles@nhs.net

Benefits of stopping smoking before surgery:

  • Reduced risk of complications after surgery.
