The North East Essex Clinical Commissioning Group (NEE CCG) has signed the Time to Change pledge as part of its commitment to its employees while raising awareness of mental health.

By signing the pledge, the CCG is committing to changing how it thinks and acts towards staff with mental health issues and to ensure they feel supported.

To demonstrate this, the organisation created an action plan with its employees which focus on seven key principles to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health.

The principles being instigated include raising awareness of mental health across the organisation; gaining support from senior management; establishing employee champions; implementing procedures to address mental health issues in the workplace; asking staff to share personal stories about their wellbeing; providing managers with the tools to support people and, where necessary, signposting them to appropriate services.

The Time to Change pledge - part of a social movement to alter attitudes by the charities MIND and Rethink Mental Illness - is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, Big Care and The National Lottery.

Currently, the Time to Change pledge has been signed by more than 900 employers across all sectors throughout England, such as FTSE 100 companies, government departments and local authorities.

Figures released by the MIND and Rethink Mental Illness charities reveal that one in four employees are affected by conditions like anxiety, depression and stress. The charities also found that mental health is the leading cause of sickness absence in the UK and costs employers, on average, £1,035 per employee per year.

Sam Hepplewhite, former NEE CCG Chief Officer, said: “I’m very glad and proud to sign the pledge on behalf of the organisation to show our commitment to our employees that we will support them whatever mental health issue they may be experiencing.

“It is extremely important that we break down the barriers that prevent people from being open and honest about any concerns they are facing as well as tackle the stigma surrounding mental health.”

This is a demonstration of our organisations commitment to join the growing movement of more than 800 employers in England to change how we think and act about mental health in the workplace and make sure that employees who are facing these problems feel supported.

We would encourage all staff to attend to show their support and also to take the opportunity to make their own pledge.
